The documentary film IWACU MU MURYANGO (working title) portrays the daily lives of brave children and young adults; of Carmella and Eric and of Jennifer and Liliane who were integrated in either their biological or extended families or in foster families. They were among 76 children and adolescents who used to be raised in the Peace Village Center – a former orphanage of SINAPISI RWANDA NGO in Rwanda‘s capital Kigali. IWACU MU MURYANGO gives an insight into how these children and young adults reflect on their lives before they moved in, whilst living in the Peace Village Center and then after being integrated into families. Liliane, one of the young ladies, must decide if she is safe where she has been integrated into her father‘s family and has to make a difficult decision.
The subjects explain in detail about how their lives have changed in different ways. The director accompanies them in their everyday lives, with their families and in school to gain real insight into what it can mean to be raised by different parents and legal guardians, experiencing major changes in their lives in the difficult phase of puberty? What kind of wishes and plans do they have for their future? Perhaps the change also brings with it the chance to leave behind old patterns of behavior that make life difficult for them.
The documentary also gives a voice to the new caregivers who tell the journey of welcoming them to their homes, the challenges and opportunities that the families faced or still face and how their relationship is now, 4 years after the Peace Village Center closed. In partnership with National Commission of Children (NCC) and Ministry of Gender and Family Promotion (MIGEPROF), SINAPISI RWANDA NGO started its own follow-up action for those families to be fully behind and to strengthen and develop the “Tubarere Mu Muryango” (TMM) program (“Let’s Raise Children in Families” program). Based on various statements by staff members of these agencies and organizations, the documentary additionally explores the meaning and precise context of this ambitious program and synergies of those and other stakeholders.
